The Joys of a Fenced Yard for our Dogs
We moved from Mexico back to the U.S. back in April, and I blogged about the long road trip with dogs and cats in June. Since then, this blog has been filled with guest posts that I had lined up before we left Mexico, and we’ve been unpacking boxes, tiling floors, and getting settled.
Now, it’s back to blogging myself. I’ve missed it, glad to be back! Have a lot of ideas for the fall. Books I’ve been reading on dog training, some deeper understanding of clicker training, and much more.
We moved back to to the same town in Colorado where we had lived for 10 years before moving to Mexico for about 5 years. Luckily, when we arrived with our dogs and cats, we had already bought a house from a friend. It’s got about half an acre of land — high desert with a lot of yucca, a well-defended plant with sharp spikes that are painful to human ankles and dog paws and legs.
Still, it’s a yard!
This summer, my husband Kelly and a friend put in the fence posts and installed the wire field fencing. Then Kelly made three gates, defining the half of the yard that the dogs can have access to. There is a garden area we will have to fence in before we start gardening next year, but for now the dogs can run through it. The only thing alive in the garden is rhubarb and so we put a fence around it, to protect the dogs from its toxic leaves. At least, the leaves are toxic to human so I am guessing that they are to dogs too.
So a couple of weeks ago, we turned the dogs loose in the yard. They loved it immediately and now they have favorite digging spots, favorite shade spots, favorite places to watch the cats from. (Our cats have their own, totally enclosed yard, where they can be outside but with fencing over it like a roof, the coyotes and neighborhood pets can’t get to them.)
LarryDog is 13 this summer and a bit slow. He loves his morning walks, but in the yard he is content to putter around.
Lola, our 4-year-old Rottie, is another story. We removed the yucca along the fenceline and a few trails for now, and she runs and runs. We play ball with her, and she had a play date with another Rottie girl last week. They have gone for walks together before, and they were fine off leash together, the first time we’d tried it. It was hot and they didn’t romp wildly, but a good time was had by all.
There’s a young Blue Heeler who lives a couple of blocks from here. Luckily there is almost no traffic in our area, because now and then he gets out of his yard. We are on his meandering route when he gets loose. Yesterday he and Lola had a great times running the fence line together, one on either side. I was tempted to let him in the yard to play, but Kelly pointed out that we don’t want the dog to feel TOO much at home here! LarryDog (himself part Blue Heeler) doesn’t like him. So the visitor and Lola played for a while and then the little guy went off.
Lola gazed longingly out the window at where she had last seen him. “I had boy friends like that,” I said to her. “He’ll be back sometime, for a while!”

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul is a strange name for dry dog food. But it’s good stuff. My dogs think so — of course they will gobble up all kinds of junk, too — but more importantly, I am pretty happy with it as an affordable dry dog food.
Let me explain. When we lived in Mexico for several years, we could get some American dog food. Most of it was quite conventional, as was all the Mexican dog food I ever saw — most of that was brands you would recognize. The best of what was available was a Diamond brand lamb and rice, so we used that in combination with homemade dog food I made based on recipes from a terrific book by veterinarian Dr. Richard Pitcairn and his wife. That link takes you to my blog entry, complete with a Youtube video I made, about that approach.
Well, now we are back home in a rather remote town in Colorado. I haven’t been able to find that Diamond dry dog food or anything else I really wanted to feed my dogs within our usual shopping range of about 50 miles. So of course I went online. I found all kinds of exquisite dog food, some of it organic, grain-free, and otherwise really good stuff. Expensive but hey I was going to give it a try.
I tried several different online dog food retailers but once I got to the shopping cart, I gagged at the shipping costs, at least half what the food itself cost. I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that kind of money.
So then I went to Amazon, famed for its free shipping. Now some of the retailers that sell through them do not offer free shipping so you have to watch out. Anyway, I eventually settled on Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul Dry Dog Food, which comes with free shipping. That link takes you to the page where you can read the reviews, etc. I’ve reordered a couple of times. Sometimes I still do some homemade food, sometimes not.
Besides being economical, its ingredients do not start with a grain, something I always try to avoid. Here are the first few: Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice, oatmeal, millet, white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), potatoes, egg product, tomato pomace, duck, salmon, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, choline chloride, dried chicory root, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine…

What Did I Come In Here For Anyway?
Have you ever walked into a room and then forgot what you went in there for? You search around, can’t figure out what you need so you leave and then 10 minutes later you remember and you go and get it? How do you deal with that mental error? Likely you do nothing. You possible feel a bit stupid but you forget it.
This shot sums up my feelings about running at a World Championship pretty well. Taken at the start line, just before I ran with Feature it is clear where my thoughts are . . . it is all about the dog.. Photo by Ursula Urban.
That is exactly what I did last week at the world championships when I ran the wrong course. I apologized to my teammates, I whispered to my red girls how proud I was of the job each of them did and I promised them I would be better every run after that –and I was.
We all make mental errors. The ones that no one knows about we get over pretty quickly don’t we? Forgetting why you went into a room is a pretty benign error. Nobody knows about it and you forget about it. You run a course wrong in your own backyard you likely forget about it before you get back into the house.
Funny you forgive yourself pretty easily for some slip ups, why not others? Yes something that impacts a “team” may be more difficult to get over than forgetting why you walked into a room, but they are all just mental errors. I think part of the disappointment comes from missing out on a chance to win something important but I believe for many people the real difference comes when our egos try to stop us from appearing weak or incompetent in front of our peers. Mine gave up trying to stop me years ago:).
Failing in public can get even more difficult if you are someone that others looks up to like a teacher or a judge. I believe this is a big reason many people don’t step into the agility ring at all, or won’t enter a “big” event like their breed National Speciality or a Regional or National Championship. Or perhaps they once did participate in agility but now don’t allow themselves that luxury for fear of exposing their limitations to others.
Hey, get over yourself.
Trust me, few people are actually watching you anyway. Sure they may be at ringside, but that is just where they are physically. Mentally they are either talking about their next run or explaining away the follies of their last one.
Your shenanigans on the agility field may entertain an eye blink of time in their otherwise preoccupied mind but your antics will quickly be forgotten with the same speed with which you entered their thought processes.
You know I am right.
Here are two of my favorite quotes on overcoming;
I make the most of all that comes and the least of all that goes.
Sara Teasdale
Seriously good words to live by, everything coming back to gratitude for me.
and
“Failure is an event not a person; yesterday ended last night.”
Zig Zigler (you have just got to love the Zigmeister:)).
For me, yesterday ends after each run. My next run is a new day.
Looking back at the unfortunate event of me walking the wrong course at the World Championships some have suggested a teammate or coach should have caught my error in course walking during the actual course walk through? Here is what I think. First of all, as the late Coach Wooden said
“You are never a failure if you did your best — unless you blame others.”
I did my best. Actually when I look at the videos of those runs– my dogs and I were pretty darn great. It is just unfortunate the judge wasn’t judging the course I was running:).
Secondly, I believe somebody was meant to make that error this year. Obviously God figured I was the best prepared for this job:). And I guess He was right because I held my head high and felt no shame, misery or embarrassment after the episode. I was disappointed I didn’t do better for my dogs, my friends, my country – but I accepted the fact I am human and with that comes the privilege to fail and move on. Once my dogs were cooled out, I head back to the stands to sit with my team, make plans to prevent the same thing from happening on future runs and then enjoy watching the rest of the class.
It was a error, but one I know has already lead to some great things. Like the discussion we are having here on this blog. Or me learning an incredible lesson about myself or maybe even FCI looking at the way they run their team event (that may be too much to ask but obviously the teams that must run first are at a terrible disadvantage that never gets balanced out later on at the event).
I was on a Canadian team that had extremely high expectations for the 2010 World Championship but one that had an even higher sense of team unity. We had great leadership that started at home with our mental prep coach; John Cullen and was carried on at the event by a management team that handled each and every disappointment in a way that allowed the team member to rebound and do better on their next run.
Never make excuses; your friends don’t need them and your foes won’t believe them.
John Wooden
I’ve got more to share with you on this topic later:).
Today as we Canadians celebrate our Thanksgiving weekend, I am grateful for the awesome support each of you have shown on this blog with your great comments on this subject.

Head Halters VS A Flat Buckle Collar
Today I wrote a post for training list about head halters being my tool of choice in training. I thought I would share it here with all of you.
Don’t get me wrong I want all of my dogs on a flat collar– it is easier on so may levels. However I want the great beahaviour I can create with a head halter. So my goal when first putting a head halter on a puppy is to get it off as fast as I can — but keep the good behaviour that is established by using the halter.
Here is my post;
Head halters vs collars — here is my firm belief;
A dog in training on a head halter receives more reinforcement from their owner than dogs on a flat collar and a dog in training on a flat collar receives far more reinforcement from his environment then dogs on a head halter.
Think of how we create drive and intensity in a dog’s behaviour (be it for a retrieve, a recall or in schutzhund work to create intensity for bite work). You hold the dog back using their opposition reflex to create more desire towards the intended target.
That is what you are doing when walking your dog in a distraction filled environment on a flat collar or harness where you can’t control what the dog is focusing upon.
At first, (potentially as a puppy) the dog might just have an innocent curiosity as he walks by something that grab his attention. He looks, alerts, ears come up, perhaps a low woof. But each time the dog is dragged away from the distraction (be it other dogs running, children skipping, wildlife etc) on his flat collar and lead you are helping to the evolution of this curiosity into drive towards– and potentially aggression targeted at those distractions.
With a head halter you turn the dog’s head away from the distraction and hold his head towards you as you back away say 6 -10 steps then give the dog his head to as it is now an “ItsYerChoice” moment. If the dog chooses to lunge back towards the distraction, you repeat the back away process — controlling access to any reinforcement the dog my gain from his environment. If instead the dog chooses to focus on you when you drop your leash and give him the choose — brilliant — you keep walking creating an opportunity to reinforce your dog for a good choice (ignoring distractions while walking with you).
I have used a head halter on every dog I have ever trained since 1990. My goal when I put one on a dog is to get one off as fast as I can. So I am comitted to training every time I walk my dog on a head halter — reinforcement comes from me — not the environment. I did try with Buzzy (born Sept 1996) to raise him without a head halter. I failed miserably and put one on him in the spring of 1997.
The halter allows me to create great rehearsals of behaviour so that when I fade the use of the halter I end up with a dog on walking ona flat collar but with the good responses that were established while on the head halter.
I then have a dog I can walk on a loose leash anywhere under any distraction, plus I have a dog that understand what are the “good choices” he has available to him when faced with the choice of a distraction.
I am not saying all of this is not possible with some dogs on a flat collar but I am saying this reality IS possible with ANY dog on a head halter (and in my opinion you will get there faster).
Take a highly distraction filled environment and with many dogs, especially the motion sensitive ones, you are paralyzed when faced with big-time distractions.
If there isn’t enough (value for the dog) with you (ie your cookies are not compelling enough if you are luring or the history of reinforcement is not convincing enough) your dog will continue to stare at or lunge at the distraction — thus allow the dog to look to his environment over you for his source of reinforcement when faced with similar distractions in the future.
Thus resulting in a big reason for weak recalls and handler created aggression.
There will always be nay sayers who want to finger point at head halters as a potentially injurious tool. When I worked on the AHA committee for the “Humane and Ethical Treatment of Animals in Training” I can tell you we saw proof of dogs being killed by trainers (some in “puppy classes”) with a leash and collar. Proving that any tool can become a weapon if used incorrectly.
The key is education. In my career I have found that very few people know how to properly;
1)Acclimatize the head halter (by playing games etc)
2)Swiftly yet humanely turn the dog’s head away from distraction & present choices for reinforcement during these sessions.
or
3) Fade the use of the halter but keep the good behaviour it created.
Once that knowledge is in place a head halter is something no on would do without — it would become as important to a dog’s training as a leash and collar.
FYI, I have a chapter at the back of my book Shaping Success dedicated to teaching how we use a head halter here at Say Yes.
Today I am grateful for tools like head halters. I could not imagine the frustration of raising a motion sensitive Border Collie without one (oh wait, I can, I tried it with Buzz ”. . . ooh look something shiny!”)

Laser pointers Or Safe for your Puppy Dog?
For a very good Guide to all sorts of processes training DOG and DOG behavior challenges use and recommend Clickertraining ... link that goes to describe this terrific ebook you can take immediately wherever you are! --Rosana
I love to drive Our cats wild by playing with laser pointer, but my own dogs are not too intrigued. here are some good information about whether the t0 use one of the dogs.
Whether laser pointers are safely use dogs to train or play? Some dogs have developed serious behaviour "obsessive-compulsive" (known as "stereotypie") when permitted to chase dot from laserpointer, others do not develop these behaviors. How can we know if our dog is at risk of developing stereotypie when exposed to laser pointer, and dangerous to our dog eyes?
Certain breeds appear to have a greater tendency to develop abnormal behavior when exposed to laser pointer, but these are also popular as service dogs and many are trained to "target" dot laser in their work without developing unusual behaviour. So while some people say that certain breeds not with laser, which does not mean that your special dog that breed draw stereotypie. Conversely does not mean that just because you don't have a dog of one of these breeds your dog is safe, either.
Some symptoms that may be developing a stereotype are:
-pawing or scratching his area/s where dot recently was seen by more than 1 minute after he dot
-the patrol area/s where dot recently seen more than 1 minute early
-repeatedly returning to area/s where dot because other than observed not to chase dot again
-develop strong chasing behaviour for other sources of light and shadows
If your dog shows any of these signs, then it is time to stop using the laser pointer, as your dog is at risk of developing serious behavioral problem. If using a laser pointer, it is important that all training objectives should consult experienced animal behaviorist.
Strongly recommended not to use laser pointer to play games with your dog. Almost any dog will enjoy chasing dot laser, but you should not risk. There are more games to play and dogs who are chasing dots laser will probably be just as happy to chase a ball or play tug.
If you are training your dog to ' objective ' dot laser, then approach training in order to minimise chasing behavior slowly introduce movement and be aware that you are teaching your dog ' target ' using some specific behaviour that have been defined and trained. indications that the risk of developing the stereotype is minimized when training is achieved in this way.
Treatment of weight gain or chasing should be carried out in the guidelines veterinary behaviorist. Medicines are available that can Do not in effect any circumstances attempt to punish weight gain light or shadow chasing.
Light by laser pointer functionality is it safe for eye dog?Generally light emitted from laser pointer functionality is very weak and will probably be the only cause temporary blinding if pointed directly to the eye dog by accident. Prolonged or repeated exposure could be harmful and should be avoided.

Dog Training collar Aka Shock collars buyer Guide
More than 30 years ago, electronic collars made their way into the dog-training scene. However, because the first generation of dog training collars were only capable of delivering one level of stimulation to the dog, they where appropriately nicknamed shock collars. These collars required the trainer to select the level of correction by inserting an "intensity plug" into the collar (before putting the collar on the dog for training, once the collar was on the dog they could not change the intensity level). This plug would then cause the collar to emit the same level of stimulation for all corrections issued during the session, regardless of how small or large the infraction - hence the nickname - shock collars.
The term shock collar had a very negative connotation that dramatically decreased their widespread acceptance in the dog-training arena. It was commonly stated that, "Only hard headed dogs that could not be trained by traditional means where run with shock collars". As a result, very few professional trainers were public about their use of electronic dog collars fearing that clients would not entrust dogs to their care. However, some professionals, including legendary Rex Carr, where up-front about their use of electronic collars and worked diligently at developing a training program that utilized the collar in a way dogs could understand. Rex quickly became know as a pioneer of training retrievers with electronic collars. In fact, most if not all training techniques used today with retrievers are derivate from Rex's original work.
Recognizing the limitations of the first generation of electronic dog training collars, manufacturers worked to refine their design. It was only until the release of the second generation of electronic collars that allowed the trainer to vary the level of intensity from the hand-held transmitter. The trainer could now select from one of three levels of intensity for a particular "intensity plug": high, medium and low. This design still had its shortcomings. The trainer still only had 3 levels of stimulation to choose from and the lowest level of stimulation was typically inappropriate for simple corrections.
While the second generation of electronic collars was a great advancement in dog training collars, this technology was replaced in the last decade by collars that gave the trainer the ability to select multiple levels of intensity from the transmitter. This single advancement combined with customer education has done more for the widespread acceptance of the electronic collar than any other advancement in the collar's history.
Manufacturers quickly recognized that a great design alone was not going to give their product the acceptance needed to support their newfound industry; it was only through education that new customers would understand how to use these training devices to advance their dog in a proper manner. The most significant form of education came when Tri-Tronics released a book written by Jim and Phyllis Dobbs and Alice Woodward, Tri-Tronics Training Retrievers. This book focused on incorporating electronic collars in all phases of training retrievers and walked the reader through a series of detailed steps, bringing a dog from A to Z.
As a result of the technological advancements and the educational support provided by manufacturers, the days of the "shock collar" are gone, giving way to the remote training collars. Today, like cell phones, its becoming more difficult to find someone who trains without an electronic collar.
The remainder of this article will focus on the technology found in many of the collars manufactured by the industry leaders and explain how each is applicable in training gundogs and your selection of an electronic collar.
Types of Stimulation - Continuous Stimulation vs. Momentary Stimulation
Let's start by defining the two forms of stimulation available on the market today. First, there is continuous stimulation; this method of stimulation delivers an electronic correction to the dog for as long as the trainer presses the button on the transmitter. If the trainer holds the button down for five seconds the dog will receive five seconds worth of stimulation. However, most models on the market today will timeout after seven to ten seconds of stimulation has been applied to the dog.
The second form of stimulation available on some collars is momentary stimulation. Momentary stimulation, sometimes call a "nick", is different from continuous stimulation in one simple way; no matter how long the trainer depresses the button, the dog will only receive a short electronic correction, the duration of which is measured in a fraction of a second.
When might you use continuous or momentary stimulation?
Continuous form of stimulation can be used in training when you need to extend a meaningful correction to your dog and re-establish control of a training situation. A great example of a training scenario where you might need to apply continuous stimulation is when you need to gain control over your dog on a runner. In this situation, a simple "nick" or short burst of stimulation may do nothing to stop him on that illusive cock pheasant. Often, a dog might just run through a short burst of electronic stimulation because he is too excited about the prospect of fresh scent to listen to your sit or "hup" whistle. The continuous level of stimulation is what is required to stop him in his tracks. Because the correction is applied to the dog for as long as you hold the button down the effect to the dog is a stronger form of correction. Another example of when continuous stimulation would be a valuable training tool would be when teaching a flushing dog to turn on the "come around" whistle. Here you would use a much lower level of stimulation and apply the stimulation in conjunction with the "come around" command/whistle, only releasing the pressure when he complies with your command. In both training scenarios, the dog has to be taught the way out of the pressure (or the correct response) before utilizing a collar.
Momentary stimulation can be used in training when you need to apply a short, light form of correction. A classic training scenario where we would use momentary stimulation is when utilizing "indirect pressure" during training. With indirect pressure, you want to apply a short, quick correction for not compiling to a command after you have gotten control over him through attrition. For example, if your dog refuses to take a "right-handed angled back" command on a blind retrieve, momentary stimulation can be used after stopping him with a firm "sit" whistle, "nicking" him once he is sitting for refusing to take the "right-handed angle back" command, then re-issuing the "angle back" command. In this case, the momentary stimulation applies a short less intense correction that does not "rock the boat".
Range
Upon first consideration, you may not think that you would need an electronic collar that has a range of one mile. However, if you are hunting over a big running pointer, in the thick backwoods of New England, you might be better served with a collar that has an effective range of a half-mile or greater than a collar with less range. Most manufacturers quote "line-of-sight" range for their collars. However, the effective range of an electronic collar can vary according to terrain and environmental conditions. For basic obedience and most yard work, a collar that is capable of extending to 150 to 300 yards is more than adequate. However, if you are training in the field or working in any type of cover, more range is needed to produce a reliable signal.
Intensity Levels
Maybe the most important advancements in the electronic collar in the past ten years has been the change in the design of the electronic collar to allow a trainer to change levels of stimulation at the transmitter, rather than at the collar. In days gone past, a trainer could only change the levels of stimulation by physically changing the "intensity plug" and/or contact points on the collar itself.
Today, virtually all quality dog training collars on the market allow the trainer to select the level of stimulation from the transmitter. The old term, shock collar is no longer accurate, the term "electronic training collars" has since replaced this term primarily due to this single design change which allows a trainer to select just the right amount of stimulation necessary to correct the dog making the electronic collar a humane approach to training dogs. Now you can select a mild level of stimulation (barely noticeable by human touch) or a severe level of correction that would make even the toughest man take notice. The responsibility is now with the trainer to select the appropriate correction for the dog.
Transmitter Design
Probably the most important factor in regards to usability of an electronic collar rests within the transmitter design. Most transmitters on the market today fit easily into your hand. However, differences exist in the design of the transmitter. Some manufacturers make transmitters that are small, lightweight and can be hung on a lanyard. Other manufacturers make transmitters that are larger but extremely easy to use. Like most things in life, it comes down to personal preference. In order for any collar to be an effective training device it must be easy to use and be able to apply the correction at the exact moment it is needed. The last thing you want to be doing is fumbling for your transmitter, setting an intensity level when you should be delivering a firm correction that the dog will understand.
The last feature to take into consideration when evaluating the design of a transmitter is the resistance of the transmitter to weather. Some transmitters are water resistant while others are waterproof. If using an electronic collar while waterfowling you might want to consider a transmitter that is waterproof and can endure a "fall in the drink".
Collar Design
The final consideration when choosing an electronic collar is the design of the collar/receiver unit itself. Some earlier models of electronic collars, intended for upland use, had external antennas that extended beyond the body of the collar and often became caught up on or became damaged by heavy brush. This design has since been replaced with antennas that are self-contained within the body of the receiver unit.
Like the transmitter design, collars also come in units that are water resistant and waterproof. If you intend on using your dog in or around water I would highly recommend purchasing a collar that is waterproof. These collars can be fully submerged in water while in the field without harming the internal electronics, a must for most hunters.
Final Note
Used correctly, the electronic collar can be an invaluable tool when training your gundog. There is no other tool that can help you effectively apply a correction to your dog than one of the many electronic collars on the market today. The days of chasing down your dog to apply a traditional correction (only have lost the significance of the timing) are long gone. Now you can effectively and reliably apply the correction at the moment when it is needed. Generally, when training dogs, you should place your dog, or yourself in a situation where both of you are ready to manage, to avoid any accident or frustration from occurring. In addition, if you are training your Puppy in your House with lots of older dogs, we must not allow them to mingle especially when grownup dogs are an impatient for those younger. Dog Training in the Distractions – checking for Real World In positive reinforcement
In case of positive dog training, Aidan Bindoff is the actual transaction. I love the point here about always setting the dog for success.
By Aidan Bindoff
Dog training is easy, when amazing dog training specialists explain in this short article. After leaving home all training will go down is completely flushed. How to overcome these distractions? Learn now!
What is strengthen? Reinforcement of what happens when a behavior is maintained or increased.Dog training is generally progress to strengthen the network of food, toys, games, comments and ' life rewards "such as let inside or walk are all possible reinforcers.
Without reinforcement behavior will never maintained or increased. This is fine if you want the behavior to disappear – simply stop, reinforcing it. But if has specific behavior, enhance it.
Most trainers dog food as these days use reinforcer. Is not the only reinforcer, but food is convenient and, let's face it, all dogs must eat!
So we start off training with food in a quiet area within the home free of obstruction. We have other pets listed below we can turn off the TV room.; we have to wait until the children are in bed. Then we closed the door and train. There are numerous books and articles that explain how to do this, so I will not be re-hash.
We start with the Problems of environment free of obstruction and in the real world. Here there are other dogs, birds, squirrels, cats, new fragrances, sights, sounds, people, cars, bikes, postmen – everything! Our training usually starts falling apart once we leave the House.
But you don't have to.
Big secret to training a dog is always set dog for success. If dog fails, we strengthen. If the company cannot strengthen, behavior can be maintained or increased if behavior has not been maintained or increased, training failed.
We configure the dog was Going too far too fast will only lead to failure. Allowing too many distractions or too big difficulties too quickly is setting up our dog failure without success, we have nothing to gain.
The best way to set our dogs for success is to control the environment, as best we can possibly be until they are well and truly soundproofed and ready for the big world wide.
Suppose that we normally train in our kitchen from off the door. Here is a list of things we can do to configure some distractions low-level:
1. place the ball Tennis in the middle of the floor
2. turn on the radio softly, and then turn it on gradually throughout our training sessions
3. have a friend to come in the room with us
4. place the piece of Stale dog food on the floor
5. wave our arms around
6. turn on the taps in half through exercise
7. Whistle Tuning
8. roll ball Tennis slowly forward our psa
9. turn away from our dog
... or any combination of these.
Note that the secret is always set our dogs for success, so that we can strengthen (maintain or improve) their good behavior.
If any of the distractions in this list are too much, our dog doesn't work Just because. And wrote in my low-level distractions list does not mean that your individual dog will not find any one of these things too distracting.
Be creative; think of new things to add to the list when your DOG can cope with them all, run a combination of two or more invite some friends to help them Have ball toss. and back during practise stays or recalls. Have one Whistle Tuning, while the second waves its arms around the sky is the limit as long as my always set our dogs for success.
Once we have trained with distractions inside the House, we're ready to find a quiet spot outside other dogs there around not children playing, not cars screaming past and hopefully not cats or squirrels. we can train behavior, and then start adding distractions from our list always define our dog succeeded.
This is all it takes to manufacture certain controlled distractions, they are brought together and always make them easily to sufficiently successful that our dog is constantly so that we need to strengthen behaviour.
